You may be concerned with all the changes you’re seeing, and maybe even when you try to talk to them everything is “fine”. Perhaps you’re feeling lost on how to help them.

ou’re beginning to notice the impact of this in every facet of your teen’s life:

  • Isolating from family, or tense relationships

  • Teachers reaching out due to missed classes, assignments or concerning grades

  • Unhealthy friendships- or no friendships at all

You want to equip your teen for success as they prepare for the next phase of their life but doing so can be difficult. If your teen is struggling with anxiety, depression and loneliness it can be more difficult.

Therapy is meant to empower your teen and ultimately increase connection with you so you can enjoy the relationship with your teenager in a new way so you can continue to support them as they grow.

Therapy can help.

Your teen can be confident in who they are becoming, communicate better and cope with their emotions.

They can also gain skills to face challenges they encounter so they can build their confidence, while learning what healthy friendships and relationships look like and receive support.

My approach to teen counseling comes from a place of strength: believing your teen has it within themselves to excel and overcome the challenges they’re experiencing now but just need some extra support to discover those resources within themselves. Your teen’s therapy journey will be tailored to their unique needs.

I recognize some teens struggle to open up so we start by getting to know one another, ensuring they feel comfortable and using age-appropriate ways to establish a connection for them to feel safe and be able to open up.

Therapy can help your teen:

  • Identify the sources of those big emotions and negative views of self

  • Lean about the impact of their emotions on their behaviors

  • Learn skills to cope with the unpleasant emotions

Angry and defiant doesn’t have to define your teen.

Your teen can thrive.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What are teen counseling sessions like?

A: During the initial session, I take some time to get to know you and your teen individually. This session is longer so we can discuss your concerns and start exploring goals for therapy. During weekly sessions, I will mostly be meeting with your teen. Sometimes, I will give your teen ‘homework’ or something for them to try in-between sessions.

Q: What if my teen doesn’t want to do therapy?

A: Some teens might ask for therapy… others may be completely against it. If possible, have them help in the decision of finding a therapist they feel they could trust and with whom they are comfortable. A consultation might be a great opportunity for them to explore what therapy looks like and who they’d be talking with during sessions. Normalizing therapy services and talking about some benefits might also be helpful!

Q: How long does therapy last?

A: There’s not a specific answer for this, as this is based on your unique needs. I review goals every 3 months to see the progress and assess any changes needed. Some feel equipped and are ready to be discharged at this time, while others prefer more time.

Q: Will I be involved in this process?

A: Of course! However, please note that your involvement in sessions will vary as it’s my goal to establish rapport with your teen. I will be checking in with you and to update with progress.
